First Church of Fairfield has the unique distinction of being the only church in the state of Connecticut named an official part of a designated cultural district.
Cultural districts are compact, walkable areas that serve as centers for artistic and cultural expression and represent places where community members congregate.
Connecticut Public Act 19-143 (C.G.S. § 10-401a) allows towns and cities to establish cultural districts “…to promote the educational, cultural, economic and general welfare of the public through the marketing of arts and cultural attractions, the encouragement of artists and artistic and cultural enterprises and the promotion of tourism.” The Fairfield Arts Commission has applied for and received State recognition for a cultural district in downtown Fairfield. In the ordinance establishing an Arts Commission, the Representative Town Meeting specifically tasked the Commission with exploring this idea.
